In honor of International Coastal and Beach Cleanup Day, Ocean World, a champion of sustainable tourism in the Dominican Republic, collaborated with the local community and environmental organizations for a day of cleaning the coastal area of Cofresí. With over 150 volunteers, including Ocean World employees, members of the Oceano Limpio Foundation, and various local authorities, the event aimed to promote collective action for ocean protection.
Participants included teachers, parents, and students from the Dominican School of Santiago, who learned about coral preservation and the innovative biofence initiative by the Oceano Limpio Foundation. Biofences act as a barrier, preventing waste from reaching the ocean.
Birgitt Heinsen, Sustainability and Public Relations Manager, expressed gratitude to the volunteers for their enthusiastic participation. She emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability and social responsibility, stating, “Sharing this mission with our community is an inspiring example of how companies can lead the way toward a more sustainable future and greater environmental responsibility.”
The initiative resulted in the collection of 979 pounds of waste, including plastic and foam containers, glass bottles, metal cans, tree pruning remains, wood, and other debris from the beach and surrounding areas.
International Beach and Coastal Cleanup Day, founded by the Ocean Conservancy over 35 years ago, has become a significant global volunteer effort. To date, more than 17 million volunteers have collected over 350 million pounds of trash, contributing to the preservation of ocean health.
